Teeth Whitening (Bleaching)

Teeth whitening (bleaching) is one of the treatment methods applied in the field of cosmetic dentistry recommended for people who are not satisfied with the color of their teeth. Before the teeth whitening procedure, tartar cleaning (scaling) is performed. With the use of a special gel and ultraviolet light in the whitening process, the tooth color can be lightened by up to 3 or 4 shades in a short and effective period. This procedure allows the person to achieve a natural and aesthetic smile. The teeth whitening process takes 1 to 4 sessions, with each session lasting approximately 30-40 minutes.

Which Age Groups Can It Be Applied to?

Teeth whitening can be applied to all age groups. However, this procedure is not recommended for pregnant women due to the chemicals used during the treatment. In addition, teeth whitening is generally not recommended for people with sensitive teeth and gums and those with cracked teeth.

Average Recovery Time Process

  • It is normal to feel tenderness for the first 24 or 48 hours after the office whitening treatment is completed. Hot and cold sensitivity can be experienced in the teeth.
  • Since the home whitening process will take several weeks, the patient may feel sensitivity throughout the treatment, but the sensitivity decreases 2 or 3 days after the treatment is completed.

Aftercare

  • During the sessions, the patient should avoid foods that can damage and stain the enamel, for example: cigarettes, coffee, tea and wine.
  • It may be suggested to use toothpaste containing baking soda and whitening agents in line with the dentist's recommendation.
  • Teeth should be gently brushed at least twice a day, accompanied by flossing and mouthwash.
  • Desensitizing toothpastes can be used when sensitivity is experienced.
